The Department
provides excellent training with teaching
opportunities at FY2 level.
The Department serves a population of 350,000 and
sees approximately 55,000 new patients per year. It
is staffed by 4 Consultants (awaiting appointment of
the fourth Consultant), 5.6 Staff Grade Specialists
and 5 Specialist Registrars in Emergency Medicine, 2
Clinical Assistant sessions, 9 Senior House Officer
posts and 9 Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner
Posts. There are over 40 whole time equivalent
nursing posts with Specialist Nurses in Mental
Health and Paediatrics. The Department has
recognition for training by all relevant UK
colleges, the College of Emergency Medicine and the
Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.
The duties of FY2 are under the supervision of
Consultant and Senior staff in the Emergency
Department. They include assessment, diagnosis and
primary treatment of all A & E patients. Supervised
training in the Emergency Dept resuscitation room is
provided including Emergency room sonography. There
is a weekly 3 hour teaching session conducted in the
Emergency Department for FY2 doctors. We encourage
FY2 doctors to undertake ALS, ATLS and APLS training
courses and audits. The Ipswich Hospital runs 2 ALS
and 2 ATLS provider courses each year together with
one APLS course.
The Postgraduate Centre has a full educational
timetable and well stocked library accessible 24
hours a day.
