The Practice

The practice is set in beautiful Suffolk countryside. Most of our patients live in Leiston but we also have patients in the surrounding villages. There are five partners supported by a full complement of nursing and ancillary staff.

Our main surgery is converted from the former Garrett Works Hall which also houses the district nurses, community midwife and health visitor. We also run a branch surgery in Yoxford village.

Teaching

All the partners take an interest in teaching. We provide teaching in three ways. Firstly, there are supervisions at the end of surgery with partners in rotation. Secondly, there are weekly tutorials between the registrar and trainer. Finally, we hold in-house educational meetings for the partners in which the registrar takes a full part. Geraint Jones was an Ipswich VTS course organiser from 1996 to 2003. Geraint has a special interest in teaching communication skills within the consultation. Kev Hopayian also acts as the GP Tutor for Suffolk. He has an interest in research and evidence-based practice, which he teaches at UEA. Kev and Karen Blades teach medical students from UEA in primary care.

Learning Opportunities

The Leiston Surgery provides the registrar with an unparalleled opportunity to
see many different aspects of general practice.

  • Leiston is a small urban town with the range of problems encountered in populations in the larger towns in Suffolk
  • The surrounding villages give the registrar a view of country practice
  • We run a branch surgery and provide dispensing service to a third of our patients
  • We perform minor surgery and provide accident and emergency cover during the day
  • We look after patients in GP beds at the Aldeburgh & District Community
    Hospital
